Still Can't Live With 'Em


   It's US Cyber Security Month and, like clockwork, we have Yahoo! in the news again telling us that the worst case from the past just keeps getting worster (I can make up words, can't I??? :-).  They are now counting their breached accounts at over 3 billion!  How many people are there in the world these days?...  Last year at this time, they announced the breach of 500 million Yahoo! account passwords and other info (while announced in 2016, the breach actually took place in 2014, and is not the same as the password breach they had in 2012! - yes, I know... it's hard to keep up!).  In honor of both Cyber Security Month and Yahoo!, I'm re-running a post I wrote in... wait for it... 2012!  Not only is everything I wrote in that post 100% relevant today, but I even commented on that 2012 Yahoo! breach.  The more things change, the more they stay the same.  Happy Cyber Security Month!


   They're dead.  They're here to stay.

   They're safe.  They're breached.

   They're encrypted.  They're visible.

   They're complex.  They're too simple.

   Once again, the topic we love to hate... Passwords!  And, you know what else???  It's also that greatest of holiday celebrations... US Cyber Security Month!

   Passwords are a mess!  A "good" password has these features:
  • hard to create
  • hard to remember
  • hard to enter
  • probably has to be changed as soon as you memorize it
  • plus other inconsistent, random rules depending upon the site

All Your Bitcoin Are Belong To Us

   If you're old enough... and geeky enough, you may remember this:


   All Your Base Are Belong To Us was one of the famous early internet memes.  You can take a break and read more about it here and here.

   Memes are fun!  But ransomware isn't.  We've talked about ransomware many times in the past.  It's a kind of virus or malware (malicious software).  It's been in the news quite a bit and the healthcare industry has had particular ransomware problems.  And the news will continue after May's "WannaCry" and June's Petya/GoldenEye global attacks.

   Basically, in a ransomware attack, infected computers cause data to be encrypted.  Normally encryption is a good thing, but only when you can also decrypt your data.  In this attack, only the attacker can restore your access to the information, and will do so for a "small consulting fee".

   Payment is typically made using Bitcoin.  Bitcoin has also been in the news.  It is what is called a "crypto-currency".  It's basically an online way to pay for things, kind of like an online debit card where you already have the funds in your account.  The main reason Bitcoin is used for ransomware is that it is fairly anonymous, particularly when compared with traditional credit cards or banking.  It's not completely anonymous - it does protect identity during transactions, but eventually someone may have to turn that bitcoin into other traditional currency.

   With all the ransomware attacks, some organizations are getting bitcoins so that they are ready in case they need to pay ransom!

World Password Day and Teen Power

   Thurs May 4, 2017 is World Password Day!  I know that's coming up fast, but don't worry, you still

have time to plan your celebration.  No, that's not the day when you share your password with the world.  Nor is it about changing your bank password from 123456 to 1234567.

   I've written about this in the past.  World Password Day is a day to learn and it's yet another opportunity to take a look at what is protecting your personal information, your financial information, your medical information as well as your internet presence and reputation.  Most passwords provide a thin veil of protection

   On World Password Day, we should at the 4 main problems we can very easily fix:
  1. People choose weak or easily guessable passwords - the simple fix is to choose better passwords!  As I've said many times in the past, when it comes to passwords, size matters!  Make 'em long.  But even if you choose a good password...
  2. Passwords get reused among sites - this is a major problem because the attackers will try stolen passwords at other sites.  And it works.  So choose a unique password for every site on which you have an account.  But...
  3. We can't remember all our passwords - so, as we've discussed in the past, use a password vault.  The vault is a program that will help you choose great passwords, recall those passwords and protect them.  But sometimes that's not enough because...
  4. Even well-chosen passwords can be guessed or hacked - so for extra protection use two-factor authentication (also called multi-factor authentication).  Typically this means using an app on your smartphone as part of the login process.  That means, to break into your account, an attacker would need both your (long, strong) password AND your smartphone.  That's hard for the attacker to do.  And using multi-factor is easy!    Setting up 2-factor authentication is easier than ever before and is in use on many mainstream sites including Google, Facebook and Twitter.  Here's some info on sites offering 2-factor authentication.

   And if those all aren't enough reasons to move to 2-factor authentication, now... that pinnacle of journalism... Teen Vogue, has put out a really good article on the subject!  You can read it here.

   In addition to really good coverage of 2-factor methods and websites, the article also goes into more advanced topics like the use of a physical fob called a Yubikey.

   What is really significant is that this article is directed at a population who both grew up with technology and is used to sharing everything. The key message is that there are good reasons for protecting your information and reputation, even if you don't yet have financial assets or a job.

   So, are you ready to take the World Password Day challenge?  Start slowly.  Get a password vault and start with your most important sites: banks, insurance, investment and social media.  Change the passwords to unique long strong ones.

Big Problems, Small Packages (part 1)


    We're constantly hearing about data breaches in the news.  Many are due to external attacks as happened to Yahoo! or OPM.  Many others are caused by well-meaning staff or contractors who carry with them on laptops that then get lost or stolen.

   USB flash drives, often called thumb drives because they're about the size of your thumb, first hit the market in around 2000.  They had relatively little storage space and weren't cheap, but quickly became a security issue both for the potential to carry and load malware as well as taking data out of the office.  I remember discussions about this issue back in the early 2000s and some organizations were even thinking about using hot glue guns to fill in and block the USB ports on computers!  That would have been a mess!

   Before long the prices came down, the storage space went up and the problems multiplied.  Many organizations were not ready for how quickly these drives got integrated into every day work.

   Today we're going to focus on data that is copied on to USB flash drives and taken out of the office.

   The highest capacity USB flash drives we can find today are around 1 TB, though there are plans for 2 TB drives coming on the market before long.  Drives over 512 GB or larger are still pretty expensive.  But we know that prices of the high capacity drives will drop as new larger drives come out.

   To give you an idea of that size... 1 TB is about the size of 1500 CD-ROMs or 143,000,000 Word documents!  That's a lot of data potentially leaving your organization.

   So how do you combat this at your organization?  You don't!  We're not dealing with an adversary who's efforts need to be defeated.  These are well-meaning staff trying to get work done.  Always assume positive intent.

Information Security Learning Resources part 2

Security Concepts
There are three key concepts of information security which you may or may not be familiar with:
    -      Confidentiality
o   Confidentiality is the characteristic of information whereby only those with sufficient privileges and a demonstrated need may access certain information. When unauthorized individuals or systems can view information, confidentiality is breached.
    -      Integrity
o   Integrity is the quality or state of being whole, complete, and uncorrupted. The integrity of information is threatened when it is exposed to corruption, damaged, destruction, or other disruption of its authentic state. Corruption can occur while information is being entered, stored, or transmitted.
    -      Availability
o   Availability is the characteristic of information that enables user access to information in a usable format without interference or obstruction. A user in this definition may be either a person or another computer system. Availability does not imply that the information is accessible to any user; rather, it means availability to authorized users.

This is known as the “security triad”. It can be further expanded upon:
    -      Privacy
o   Information that is collected, used, and stored by an organization is intended only for the purposes stated by the data owner at the time it was collected. Privacy as a characteristic of information does not signify freedom from observation (the meaning usually associated with the word), but in this context, privacy means that information will be used only in ways known to the person providing it. Many organizations collect, swap, and sell personal information as a commodity. It is now possible to collect and combine information on individuals from separate sources, which has yielded detailed databases whose data might be used in ways not agreed to, or even communicated to, the original data owner. Many people have become aware of these practices and are looking to the government for protection of the privacy of their data.
    -      Identification
o   An information system possesses the characteristic of identification when it is able to recognize individual users. Identification is the first step in gaining access to secured material, and it services as the foundation for subsequent authentication and authorization. Identification and authentication are essential to establishing the level of access or authorization that an individual is granted. Identification is typically performed by means of a user name or other ID.
    -      Authentication
o   An information system possesses the identity that he or she claims. Examples include the use of cryptographic certificates to establish Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections or the use of cryptographic hardware devices--for example, hardware tokens provided by companies such as RSA's SecurID--to confirm a user's identity.
    -      Authorization
o   After the identity of a user is authenticated, a process called authorization assures that the user (whether a person or a computer) has been specifically and explicitly authorized by the proper authority to access, update, or delete the contents of an information asset. An example of authorization is the activation and use of access control lists and authorization groups in a networking environment. Another example is a database authorization scheme to verify that the user of an application is authorized for specific functions such as reading, writing, creating, and deleting.
    -      Accountability
o   Accountability of information exists when a control provides assurance that every activity undertaken can be attributed to a named person or automated process. What You Can''t See Can Hurt You(r Data)

   "It is all around us, even now in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes.."

   It's "all around you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere."

   No, not the Matrix and not the Force, but a more insidious power... WiFi!

   Public WiFi is everywhere.  Many stores, malls, airports, cities and even parks offer it.  Sometimes it's free and sometimes not.

   It's US Cyber Security Awareness Month so it's a good time to think about the risks of using public WiFi and how to protect yourself.

   There are definitely risks in using public WiFi including:
  • pushing software - WiFi can be configured to send software to your device when you connect.  That might be OK at home or important in the office, but it can be misused by an attacker out in public.  Don't install software offered to you on a public WiFi.
  • redirecting your browsing - a WiFi connection can control how you get to websites.  If an attacker controls the WiFi, they can cause you to go to copycat websites with malicious software or to phishing sites.
  • evil twin attack - you know when you're at the coffee shop and you can connect with a WiFi connection that has the same name as that coffee shop?  How do you know it's really the coffee shop's connection?  You don't.  Anyone can buy a wireless router at the store for $25, put it anywhere, and name it anything they want.  Using a deceptive name for a WiFi connection to lure people is called the evil twin attack.
  • are you encrypted? - VPNs, Virtual Private Networks or secure connections, are a great way to protect your data when connecting over unknown networks... like the Internet!  However, you first have to connect to the Internet before establishing the VPN.
Here are some tips to reduce your risks of using WiFi outside your home or office:
  • use your smartphone hotspot - if this is a feature of your mobile phone and plan, you can use your phone as a WiFi hotspot and connect to it.  You then can feel confident that your connection is going through your cellular carrier.  Warning... this will use your mobile data and may cost you extra depending upon your plan and data limits.
  • only use wifi with a password or passphrase - even if everyone knows the password.  Using WPA or WPA2 with a password/passphrase means that every connection between a PC and the wireless network is encrypted.
  • turn off file sharing - in Windows you can designate a network as public, work or home, or you can directly turn off file sharing.  Here's an article with the instructions.
  • if possible don't use open wifi in very open areas - the more open an area you're in, the harder it is to figure out if you're connected to a legit WiFi.  And...
  • be aware of your surroundings - it's not strictly a WiFi issue, but when you're on public WiFi you're in... Public!  Protect your screen.  Protect your passwords.
   Even if you do all this, a skilled attacker can still cause you problems on a public WiFi network.  So, if you have to use public WiFi, try to:

  • limit personal info - even if it looks like a website is https, do your personal business from a secure connection at home
  • same for banking, shopping - definitely save your financial transactions for known secure connections
  • use care with confidential work data - you should use care when dealing with critical work data, particularly if you work with other peoples' personal data!

   As a side note, there are also questions about potential health risks of all the wireless signals in our environment.  It's hard to separate fact from speculation and wireless may or may not be a health issue.

   In the future we'll see even more wireless than we do now.  And we'll also see better wireless network security.  Many new cars come with WiFi hotspots and more cities and municipalities are offering wireless.

Because Math

   Encryption has been in the news again - whether it's ransomware, law enforcement and iPhones, bitcoin, quantum computing, or potential new laws.  Before we can "decrypt" all these issues, we need to talk a bit about what encryption is and isn't.

   There's an old saying in Security... "if you think encryption is the answer, you might not have understood the question".  I never liked the tone of that statement because it sounds kind of elitist, but it is basically true.  And that's because encryption is very confusing.

   Encrypting data is great because it means it can't read by unauthorized people.  And that is the trick... how to let the right people in and keep the wrong people out.  If my encrypted data is unreadable by anyone then that's called Ransomware!

   Encrypting my data so only I can read it is pretty easy.  It means that only I need the "key".  Of course, I better not loose that key!  Encrypting my data so I can share it with you is also pretty easy.  We just need a "shared secret".  If I need to share my data with a bunch of people then we get into something called "public key cryptography".  Here's a good explanation of that.


   Encryption is basically a solved problem.  Because math.  #math.  There are many great algorithms with cool names like Elliptic Curve, RSA and Two-Fish.

YAPF (Yet Another Password Fail)

   It's another week and password problems are in the news again!

   In the July 10, 2012 edition of this blog I wrote about the 2012 LinkedIn password breach.  A month earlier, LinkedIn confirmed that a Russian attacker exploited a website vulnerability and downloaded 6.5 million encrypted passwords.  You can read my old post to see why that's a problem.

   Well, some gifts just keep on giving!  Now, nearly 4 years later, a newly posted password dump from this same breach was advertised for sale on a dark web site.  Except that information on over 167 million accounts were for sale!  Of those, over 117 million had both the email and password.  Slightly different math!!!

   So why is this a problem?  Actually it's an old problem and a new problem.  Here are the key issues:
  • Poor password choices - once again, this latest set of stolen passwords shows weak passwords - the top five found passwords were: 123456 (used on over 1 million accounts!), linkedin, password, 123456789 and 12345678
  • Password reuse - since people have accounts on so many sites that need passwords, they tend to reuse them.  The one million people who used 123456 as their LinkedIn password likely reuse that on other sites.
  • Back to Work - are some of these same poor password choices being made on work systems?  Or are some work passwords being used on sites like LinkedIn and potentially included in this breach?

Hospital Held Hostage, FBiOS and CEO Phishing

   I usually don't do "news of the week" commentary posts, but too much has happened this past week and we need to discuss it!

Hospital Held Hostage.

   I'm sure by now you've seen some info on what happened at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in California.  Just in case you were on a desert island... on Feb. 5 HPMC experienced a cryptoware attack.  We've talked about those before... it's malicious software that encrypts files so that only the attacker can read them... the people who need to can't.  The story broke about 10 days later.

   Cryptoware becomes ransomware when the attackers offer to fix the problem - decrypt the files - for a "small consulting fee", usually not small and paid in bitcoin, an untraceable online currency.

   The situation itself is, unfortunately, not unique.  These kinds of attacks have been happening everywhere for years.  But there are two things that happened in this case that are unique.  First, the cryptoware completely shut down all the computerized systems in the hospital.  That means no electronic medical records, radiology, anesthesiology... just about any -ology and most hospital functions are computerized.  The hospital reverted to paper and had to turn away surgery patients or those needing more complex diagnosis, tests or procedures.  

   Second, the hospital paid the ransom.  This is the first publicized case of both a hospital shut down in this way and paying the ransom to restore their files.

   Most hospitals have procedures, called "down time procedures" for operating without some computerized resources.  And there is an incident handling process called HICS - Hospital Incident Command System - based on US FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) NIMS (National Incident Management System).  But there are still medical procedures that can't be done with out access to the electronic data or computer-controlled systems.

   This attack is not OK.  Stealing people's data is bad enough.  But this affects lives.

FAQ:
   Can this happen here (wherever "here" is)?  It can, it has, it does and it will.  All industries and even home systems have been hit.  It's not "if", but "when".

   Can't we prevent it?  Yes!

   Wait.  What?  There's more to that story.  An attack like this can be prevented, but systems would have to be locked down so tight that they might not be usable.  And that's not a solution.  But there are some proactive things that can be done:
  • Don't click!  Most of these kinds of attacks start with the click of a link on a website or in an email, or opening an email attachment.  We've discussed this many times before... if you're not expecting it, if it doesn't look right, if it's not consistent... don't click!
  • Endpoint controls.  These are controls on your desktop or laptop computer including old-school anti-virus, application whitelisting, and execution controls; operational procedures like having a standard workstation configuration and regular patching.
  • Network/System controls.  Like monitoring and keeping all applications up to date with the latest versions and patches, and reliable and tested offline backups.
  • Internet controls.  Like web site filtering and email controls.
   So why did they pay?  Isn't that bad?  In some cases, if the cryptoware infection gets so bad that the organization cannot recover, there may be no other choice then to pay.  And even that's no guarantee that the attackers will or can give you the key to decrypt the files.  In some attacks, if the victim doesn't pay in time, the key is deleted and the files could be unrecoverable.  It's obviously better not to pay (or not to have to pay!), but the organization might not have a choice.

   Just a quick commentary on the other two issues.

CEO Phishing.

   Or perhaps more correctly... phishing from your CEO!  In this phishing attack variant, an email comes from "the CEO" (or other highly placed official) demanding some kind of immediate action, typically involving wiring money.  All too often, the recipient does what they're told and sends the funds.

   Recent issues in the US and in France have kept this in the news.  Now Microsoft is getting in on the act, trying to make improvements to Outlook to help with this problem.

   As we've discussed in the past, if something on a web page or email doesn't look right, it probably isn't.  Don't click; Report it!  And even if you did click, report it!

FBiOS.

   After the San Bernadino, California terrorist shooting last December, Federal authorities captured one of the attacker's cell phone.  It is an Apple 5C.  Because of the way Apple encrypts its phones, law enforcement has been unable to view the contents of the phone.

   This week a federal judge ordered Apple to help unlock the phone.  The order is based upon the 1789 law called the All Writs Act.  Apple has chosen not to comply and that has led to plenty of discussion on both sides of the issue.  Apple says helping would set a bad precedent and weaken their phones' protections.  The FBI says it's Apple's duty to help with this criminal investigation.

   As is so often the case, there is no perfect answer.

   As Benjamin Franklin famously did not say, "Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither".  The reality for encryption is, if we make technology that law enforcement can crack, then anyone can crack it.  This is true because of the law no one can break - the law of mathematics!

   However, the Apple 5C uses an older encryption method than their newer phone.  So in this case, Apple could help without compromising everyone else's security and privacy.

How To Vault (part 1)

   I was recently asked to provide more information on vaults.  I think this is a memorable one :-).

   That is a great question.  We've talked about passwords and password vaults a number of times in the past including here, here and here.

The XORcist (aka Get Rid of Bad Encryption)

   I remember when the movie version of the Exorcist came out.  I was in high school and it was probably the scariest, most graphic movie released by that time.  Parents didn't want their kids to see it.  There were all kinds of media discussions about the potential detrimental effects to roller-skating Linda Blair, who played the possessed Regan.  It was a freaky movie, at least for it's day, though it was way surpassed in gore by the slasher movies of the 80s.

   I recently read the book (well, you know... audiobook!).  It's well written and I recommend it.  But it is graphic, and there's plenty that wasn't in the movie.

   Easily as scary is the way many systems and sites handle encryption!  For those who don't get the title... XOR is a basic mathematical function that all computers can do easily and quickly.  It's critical for computer operations, and is used in some encryption operations, but is not really a strong encryption method by itself.  If you want to learn more about XOR, look here or here.

   I've covered problems with passwords many times here.  One of the problems that has allowed password breaches to work is poor encryption of the password file.  XOR is not a strong encryption method!

   So what does this all mean?  I have two messages... one for programmers and one for everyone else.

   Programmers.  Don't invent your own encryption.  There are fantastic, freely available encryption routines out there that you can use in your code.  Or, your organization may already have standard encryption methods you can use.  Bottom line is that 2000 years of mathematics has led us to some pretty solid encryption algorithms.  Use them!  Friends don't let friends use bad encryption!  Here are some great references.

   Everyone else.  Password storage should use something we call a "one-way hash".  Not a tasty dish, but a method of encrypting data so it can't be decrypted.  That means that no one should be able to tell you your password!  So, if you call customer support or the help desk because you forgot your password, and they can tell you your actual password... run!

Crypto Where?

   It's that scary moment...  You're getting some work done on your computer when you see a dreaded pop-up message:

   CryptoLocker, CryptoWall and other crypto-/ransom-ware has been in the news again (or still?).  This kind of malware attack was first identified in 2013.  Rather than trying to steal information, the malware encrypts your files.  But you don't have the key to decrypt.  The attacker offers, through a pop-up message, to "sell" you the "service" to unlock your files.  To make things worse, the attacker threatens to delete the keys after a set amount of time, typically 72 hours, which could prevent you from recovering the files.

   These ransom-ware viruses are usually sent to your computer as an email attachment.  The attachment can be an office file, pdf, zip file or other file.  The malware can also come from an infected web link.

   When your computer is infected, the virus operates quietly in the background, encrypting files.  You usually won't know there's a problem until the files are encrypted, and then you're in trouble.

   So if you are infected and encrypted... then what?  Well, there's bad news, good news, more bad news and some more potentially good news!

Say It Ain't So LastPass!

   There are so many data breaches happening each week that it's easy to become numb to all the announcements.  Sometimes one or two dominate the news because of the size or importance of the breach.  Sometimes there is confusion in the media about the breach or the significance.  Sometimes the experts don't agree.

   I think most people have heard about the OPM - Federal (US) Office of Personnel Management - breach in which personal information on over 4 million people, including security clearance information, possibly dating back to 1985 was stolen in attack on federal computers.  Everyone agrees that this one was big and bad.  But also in the news was the breach of information at LastPass, and there is far less consensus on the impact.

   LastPass is a password vault - a program that lets you store all your passwords in an encrypted "safe".  I've talked about password vaults many times in the past.  I have always recommended the use of a password vault and I still do.

   First, let's discuss what happened.

The Secret Life of Passwords

   I've written about passwords plenty of times in the past.  Passwords are one of the main security touch-points for people, and it's often not a pleasant experience.

   As we've discussed, it's hard for people to pick good passwords and remember them.  So users need "tricks" to help the memory.  One way I've told people to construct a password is to base the password on an embarrassing moment in your life - that way you won't forget the password and you also won't tell it to anyone else.

   Apparently people have been using that, and similar, methods.  NY Times reporter Ian Urbana wrote a great piece on this called "The Secret Life of Passwords".  He asked people to tell him their passwords - yes, you shouldn't do that - but also the story behind the passwords.  There are some very interesting stories.  People seem to memorialize a part of their life in their passwords!  You can read the full story hereLeo Laporte did a great interview with Ian in the Triangulation podcast.  You can hear that here.

   I'd like to focus to two aspects of this story that jumped out at me.

   First is the story of Cantor Fitzgerald.  They are a large financial firm who were headquartered at the World Trade Center in 2001.  When the terrorist attacks hit the towers, Cantor Fitzgerald over two-thirds of their employees were killed.  That was tragic.

Beach to Breach - It's not just for work data!

   I heard a great term recently... Beach to Breach.  SC Magazine did an article about a Sourcfire study on employees bringing their portable devices on vacation.  They found that 77% of employees bring their devices with them on vacation to keep in touch with work and that 97% of the use is email.

   Hopefully you can see some of the security problems right away... the devices have a good chance of getting lost or stolen when one is out of their "element"; plenty of opportunities to connect to unknown networks; potential to use hotel printers; possible "incentive" to bypass controls to see that one "important" message, and of course; sand in our devices!

   Organizations certainly should be concerned about the potential for breach of data or loss of equipment.  But what about the rest of us?  Should we take extra precautions with our personal devices and information when out of town?... Definitely!

The Best (First Good) Password Policy Ever!



In the past I've discussed a number of aspects of the password dilemma.  Among the key issues are
  • good passwords are hard to remember, and;
  • passwords you can remember are easy for attackers to guess.
   But, maybe one of the key issues is that password policies are universally so bad that consumers can't do the right thing because they can't figure out what that is!  We've been living with that old dogma of.... say it with me...
  • 8 characters;
  • upper/lower case;
  • numbers;
  • special characters.
   That's been around since the 60's.  Perhaps it worked in a world when people had only one password, when systems weren't all networked together, and attacking systems wasn't the lucrative business it is now.

Password Problems Again

   So here we go again... more problems with breached passwords.  But this time there is a different wrinkle.

   By now, most of you have probably heard about the recent discovery of hackers getting around 2 million userid's and passwords to online services like Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo, LinkedIn and Twitter.  Notable on the list of sites is ADP, the payroll processor.

   It's "just" 2 million sets of ID's and passwords.  That's not really big news these days when the new record of over 152 million stolen passwords was recently set by the Adobe breach.  But there is a difference here.  For most of the big password breaches, the service provider's website or password store is hacked.  Then the encrypted password file or database is downloaded.  The attackers can take their time analyzing the encrypted data to come up with userid's and passwords.  This work is made easier because so many sites use poorly implemented encryption.  And some sites use no encryption at all.

   But that's not what happened here.

   This time the passwords were stolen from the users of the sites.  That's you and me (well... hopefully not you or me!).

Rhymes with Assword

   Here we go again with more password-related problems.  You can't make this stuff up.  Well, you can but the truth is stranger.

   By now, most people have heard about the Adobe website breach.  I won't go into too many details but you can read Adobe's summary here, and here is a detailed review by Sophos.

   And, after I wrote this post I see that the This Week In Tech (TWIT) show on the great Twit TV network did a show of the same name (go to 1:56:20 in the show). Great minds think alike!  If you read the Sophos report you will see that someone used the phrase "rhymes with assword" as their password hint.

   There are a few key points to review:
  • A new record!  This breach has now set the new record for largest number of compromised accounts, 152,000,000, beating previous noteworthy large breaches including those from Sony, TJX and Heartland.

Online Self Defense - Don't Click!

   It's Cyber Security Month!  And the more things change, the more they stay the same.  The key advice for online self-defense I've given in the past is just as true now.  So to help us all celebrate, I'm "re-featuring" a few articles I've run in the past.


   This is the third post in my series on Online Self-Defense.  We've covered malware and passwords, two key issues effecting your online privacy and security.  If you've tried the simple tips I gave on those two subjects then you are now safer than most web surfers.
